Documentation for DDN

Opening the program

When you start the internet (Internet Explorer Web Browser)  at school – you will come up to the Staff page of the Hurleybulldogs website. There is a link on the main part of that page that says  - DDN Campus – click it. It will open a new window and you will be at the DDN campus signon screen.

Logging On

Your user name is the same as logging on to your computer.  Bill Hansen knows your password.

Attendance

Click on the link on the left-hand side that says “Attendance”.  Click in the absent or tardy circle to mark a student absent or tardy.  You can put in comments if you know why they are absent or tardy.  Click on “Save”

To view a student’s attendance go to “Reports” and click on “attendance summary” if you only want the total number of absences.  (Click on “generate report”.  It comes up really small.  Up at the top of the page you can change the 70% to 100% and you can actually read it!)  If you want to know what days the student was absent, go to “attendance register” and click on generate report.

Using the Grade book Portion

Lesson Planner

In order to use the grade book you must first go into “Lesson Planner” and set up groups.  Click on the icon at the top that says “New Group”.  You can set up a group for tests, daily assignments, or projects.  Or you can just have a generic group.   If you don’t set up groups you won’t be able to input grades into the grade book.

“Weight” will determine what portion of the grade that group will include.

“Sequence” will decide in what order it is displayed in the grade book.  It usually works best to begin at 99 and work down.  Then the grades you are inputting are closest to the student names.

“Hide view from portal” means parents would not view it.

“Curve” allows you to choose the appropriate curve.  K-6 curve gives N,S,E, etc.  If you don’t choose a curve, your grades will not be calculated in the grade book.

Click on “Save” when you are done.

Putting in Assignments

There are two ways to put in assignments.  The first option seems easier to me.

1.     Go to the gradebook section.  Right click in the gray area at the left side of the screen like where it says “%”.  A small box will come up that says “New Assignment”.  Click on that box.  Another screen will come up for you to input your information.

a.     The “Sequence” information determines what order your assignments appear on the screen.  If you go from 99 down, you will always have your latest assignment next to your class list.  This is easiest for me.  If you go from 1 up, you will have your assignment you are inputting far to the right of the names.

b.    “Multiplier” can give an assignment, quiz, project, or whatever more weight.  If you put a 2 in there, it is like adding that score in twice, etc.

2.     The other way assignments can be put in is in the Lesson Planner section.  Go to that section and click on “New Assignment”.  A new screen comes up with information you can put in.  You can ignore everything below the sequence information.

Putting in Grades

This can only be done in the grade book section. Check that you are in the right quarter.  Above the student names is a box that says “select a task” with an arrow.  Make sure that is on the quarter that you want Click in a box and put in the students score.  Make sure you save when you are finished.  The program will ask you if you want to save, though.  If you want to be able to see more grades, you can click on the yellow box that says “Hide Grade Totals”.  Then, you only have the gray area and the yellow and green disappear until you click “Show Grade Totals” again.

Changing Classes

In the top right hand corner if lists a class for the screen that is up.  There is an arrow and a drop down box to choose a different class.  Make sure you are in the right quarter again!!

To Add Comments Or Change a Grade

In the white column on the left choose “Grade by Task”.  Click on the Arrow next to “Please Select a Task”.  And click on what you want to do.  You should then see a class list and the grades.  You can change a grade and type in comments on this screen.  Click “Save”.

To get the grades to the office

Right click in a yellow box with a number in it.  (It doesn’t work if you click in the top boxes in that area that say Points, Possible, % and Grd.)  Go to “Post grades to another task” and click on what you want to do (Midterm, quarter grade, etc.)  That should make it so whatever is in the yellow area is now in the green area.  Click “Save” Then right click again and go to “Post Grades”.   Click “Save”.  They should now be in the office.

Using the DDN Campus from Home

Go to our website http://www.hurleybulldogs.com

Select the Staff Tab from the top menu –

This is the same web page you see when you start the browser at school.

Select the DDN campus link from the main selection.

You can log on from home just like at school.  If you go to use your grade book and you don’t get the little coffee cup picture loading the Java program, your computer does not have the Java program on it.  You can download it for free from the website www.java.com

When you do this – if you are running Windows/XP - you will get some message about Active X.  And a message that says you could harm your computer by downloading this file.  You can download from this site without worrying about your computer, so go ahead and download it.  It takes a while if you are on a slow dial up connection.

Everything else works the same.
